Más de 83 mil personas ya han visitado “Tramas Vegetales”, la nueva exposición de Fundación Artesanías de Chile

Calificada como un éxito por parte de sus visitantes, la nueva exposición con la que Fundación Artesanías de Chile aterrizó el pasado 4 de diciembre en el nivel -1 del Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, ya cuenta con una cifra récord de visitantes. En poco más de cuatro meses desde su apertura, ya ha reunido a más de ochenta y tres mil personas en torno a la cestería tradicional chilena.

Compuesta por más de 130 piezas, cada una representativa de las cuatro técnicas de este tradicional oficio artesanal, “Tramas Vegetales” introduce al visitante en el mundo de la cestería a través de dinámicos e innovadores recursos, tales como un muro completamente dedicado a las materias primas; otro enfocado a las colecciones que distintos museos del país aportaron para esta exhibición y por supuesto, gracias a un completísimo material teórico en soporte audiovisual.

Y es que desde 2006, año en que la Fundación Artesanías de Chile realizó su primera muestra temática en su espacio de venta y exposición del CCPLM, utiliza distintas metodologías de trabajo para llegar al público de manera didáctica y educativa, y de este modo despertar mayor interés por los contenidos.

La muestra que permanecerá abierta hasta mediados de 2010, también comprende visitas guidas y talleres de cestería tradicional a niños y niñas de escuelas municipalizadas a partir de abril, y además los fines de semana, éstos serán extensivos a público en general.

Cabe recordar que Fundación Artesanías de Chile, es un entidad sin fines de lucro y todas sus actividades son totalmente gratuitas, así que no dudes en acercarte con tu familia a conocer “Tramas Vegetales: El Arte de Tejer Fibras” en el nivel -1 del Centro Cultural Palacio la Moneda.

Artesanía chilena en principales museos de Estados Unidos

Como una forma de promocionar Chile y su patrimonio cultural, el fin de semana se desarrolló una muestra de artesanía chilena en un museo de Washington, lo que anteriormente se había realizado en Los Ángeles.

Cientos de personas visitaron el fin de semana la muestra de artesanía “Trunk Show de Artesanía Chilena en Estados Unidos” que se desarrolló en el museo Indio Americano en Washington DC y que anteriormente se organizó en Los Ángeles.

Para promover el evento, ProChile, organizó una recepción, encabezada por el Embajador de Chile en Estados Unidos, José Goñi, orientada principalmente a autoridades, potenciales compradores, tiendas especializadas, organizaciones de comercio justo y medios de prensa local.

“Mediante esta iniciativa, ProChile, apoya y promueve la difusión de la cultura que se expresa por medio de las artesanías, al mismo tiempo que contribuye con la promoción de organizaciones que ayudan a pequeños artesanos a lo largo del país y a una exportación no tradicional de gran potencial en EE.UU.”, señaló el Director Comercial de ProChile en Washington, Alejandro Buvinic.

Un número aproximado de 2.000 artesanos son los que están detrás de las organizaciones que estuvieron presentes en la muestra, los cuales indirectamente ven potenciada la comercialización de sus productos. Estas fueron Corporación Canto de Agua, que apoya a cerca de 66 artesanos en la región de Atacama; Artesanías de Chile que apoya en la comercialización a cerca de 1.800 artesanos chilenos; Fundación Chol Chol organización sin fines de lucro que trabaja con cerca de 200 mujeres artesanas de la Araucanía y Cuenco.

En la ocasión se aprovechó de lanzar el libro “Under a Lucky Star“ el cual relata la vida de James Mundell, un filántropo estadounidense que trabajó en la Araucanía apoyando a las comunidades indígenas mapuches para superar la pobreza.

En la ocasión las palabras en mapudungun de la artesana mapuche Anita Paillamil de la Fundación Chol Chol, traducidas por la autora del libro Elizabeth Nicoletti, cautivaron a los presentes quienes quedaron gratamente sorprendidos de los agradecimientos ofrecidos por la artesana en su lengua originaria.

Adicionalmente, las empresas participantes sostuvieron reuniones comerciales con los principales importadores de productos artesanales en Estados Unidos.

Artesanía en Los Ángeles

En el marco del Día de la Raza (Columbus Day en Estados Unidos), la ciudad de Los Ángeles, California, disfrutó de una representativa exhibición de artesanía chilena en la que las organizaciones Comparte y Cuenco, junto con la diseñadora Claudia Betancourt de Walka, expusieron sus trabajos. Esta muestra se realizó en el Museum of Latin American Art (entre el 9 y 11 de octubre) y el Craft And Folk Art Museum (10 de octubre).

En ellas el público pudo apreciar y adquirir productos originales chilenos en madera, textiles, joyería en plata, cerámica, figuras de crin, a cargo de las empresas Comparte, Walka joyería contemporánea y Cuenco. Además estas empresas sostuvieron reuniones comerciales con los principales importadores del sector en Estados Unidos.

Gran cantidad de público asistió a ambos lugares, entre los que destacaron integrantes de la comunidad latina residente en Los Ángeles, directores y miembros de ambos museos, importadores y dueños de joyerías. Los visitantes mostraron un alto interés por la calidad y originalidad de las piezas exhibidas, donde destacaron los trabajos de la Fundación Cuenco que ganó el Premio UNESCO. En los eventos se ofreció vino y empanadas chilenas y fue animado con la música andina en vivo del grupo Sajama.

“Trunk Show es la exhibición en la cual los exportadores chilenos tienen la opción de vender sus productos al público, y en ésta se apreció una muestra de excelente nivel, que logró la perfecta mixtura entre el uso de diseños y técnicas tradicionales representativas de nuestras culturas y la creatividad e innovación de los artesanos y orfebres chilenos”, comentó la Directora de la Oficina de Prochile en Los Ángeles, Viviana Araneda.

Destacó que se vendieron varias piezas del rango alto de precios (US$ 500 y más), además los representantes chilenos hicieron importantes contactos para potenciales exportaciones.

Ambas actividades fueron difundidas en diversos medios de comunicación, como el diario Los Angeles Times e importantes publicaciones relativas a eventos culturales y de entretenimiento como BizBash, KCET y Long Beach Press Telegram.

La Oficina Comercial de ProChile en Los Ángeles organizó una recepción en los dos museos, en donde invitó a autoridades, potenciales compradores, tiendas especializadas, organizaciones de comercio justo y medios de prensa local.

Comparte es una organización de comercio justo cuya misión es promover y exportar productos de alta calidad en diseño y confección; Cuenco ofrece bisuterías de diseño contemporáneo pero con tejidos tradicionales en crin, plata y acero, y Walka tiene joyas de alta calidad con materiales orgánicos unidos a metales nobles como plata, cobre y oro.

Held once every four years, the Festival of Pacific Arts gives each Pacific country an opportunity to share their culture, beliefs, myths, legends, dances and songs. In October 2000, the Festival was hosted by the French overseas territory of New Caledonia where over two thousand people from twenty-seven participating Pacific nations converged on the capital, Noumea. Events were simultaneous in three or four locations and Festival fever reached epidemic proportions.
The first festival was held in Suva in 1972. Each Festival provides the opportunity for Pacific countries to share their cultures, allowing them to chart a unique course towards the future despite globalization. The goal is to maintain the authenticity of indigenous Pacific cultures, as constructed by each country's artists, and to demystify the exotic image which tourism continues to promote. The struggle, according to Kanak philosopher Jean-Marie Tjibaou is to build as much of our past and culture as we can into the future community. "Culture," he said, "is always unfinished. Our identity lies ahead of us."
In 2004, the FPA was held in Palau, Micronesia. In 2008, American Samoa will act as the host nation.

Tejidos y Cestería Mapuches

Con la artesania mapuche, ocurre algo similar, ya que, pese a ciertos cambios poshispánicos, ha mantenido el carácter tradicional. La artesania desde tiempos remotos ha sido una actividad productiva muy relevante, elaborando infinidad de piezas de utilidad práctica, o de expresión estética y espiritual. Frecuentemente, se da una combinación de ambas.
Las técnicas han sido muy variadas, destacandose el trabajo en piedra, tejido, fibras vegetales, madera y cerámica, aunque sin duda la expresió n más elevada ha sido la orfebrería, mediante el cincelado y repujado a mano de la plata. No hay dudas, de que las técnicas de este trabajo se remontan a épocas precolombinas, sin embargo es a partir del descubrimiento de América, y de la posibilidad de obtener mayor cantidad de metal por el contacto con los españoles, que esta actividad se desarrolla más intensamente.

En sus joyas no solo se expresa un particular sentido estético, sino que además representan las percepciones cosmogó nicas del pueblo y su misteriosa teogonia.
Desde épocas inmemoriales, las mujeres mapuches -fundamentalmente las esposas de los lonkos (cabezas) o caciques- ponian un gran enfasís en la pocesión de joyas de plata, que luego lucian en fiestas y celebraciones religiosas.
Los mapuches crean multiples diseños, de piezas femeninas (tupus, trailonkos, trapelacuchas, sikel) y masculinos, que tenian que ver con engalanar el atuendo de jinete y sus caballos, siendo la plateria femenina tradicional y diferenciada, la masculina se basa en modelos hispanos. Esta plateria, hoy solo la realizan pocos orfebres que aun conservan la tradició n de su pueblo, sin embargo todavía se puede ver en los Kamarucos a las mujeres y hombres mapuches, engalanados con las mejor artesanías que ha desarrollado su pueblo.
La Cordillera de los Andes -Pire-Mapu o Piren-, (tierra de las nieves), es el territorio por excelencia del pueblo Mapuche. Esta gran muralla jamás pudo separar a este pueblo, que siempre vivió recostado sobre sus laderas y en ellas busco y busca los medios de subsistencia.

Can buying hand made save the world? The people at Etsy Earth certainly think so and with good reason. Buying hand made often means supporting local artists, small business and minimizing your impact on the planet (since hand made items do not create anywhere near the amount of pollution that mass produced items do).
So what can you buy hand made?
A whole lot: From skincare products (this month’s ydt invite a friend giveaway includes hand made soap), to jewelry, clothing, picture frames, photographs, notebooks and more. Most of the sellers in the hand made movement are micro business owners with immense love and passion for what they do (can’t say the same for your mass produced frame from Target).
At ydt, we are personally inspired by the hand made movement because it encourages us to a take a step back from constantly buying “stuff” to supporting an act of creativity while also lessening your carbon footprint through the purchase (compared to buying it through a big retailer).

Ca Macana: a recovered tradition

Ca' Macana is one of the oldest studios in Venice. We started working on masks at the beginning of the 1980s, when, after two centuries of inactivity, the Venice Carnival was revived. At the time we were achitecture students in the city and, partly out of necessity and partly for fun, we tried creating the first models and selling them in the squares and along the alleys. These were only attempts at mask making, since nobody really knew what materials to use or what techniques to adopt.

Masks in Venice once had enormous significance in social relations, to such an extent that in some cases they were made compulsory by law, and over the centuries masks makers had considerably refined their art. But, with the fall of the Venetian Republic at the end of the 18th century, the use and tradition of masks gradually began to decline, until they disappeared altogether. At that time, hardly anything of this tradition remained in the culture and collective conscience of the Venetian people, and only slight traces could be found in obscure volumes buried in the libraries. It was a real adventure to create the first models, to revive an ancient craft and transform a bit of fun into a proper job, a job which for us today is the best job in the world! Just as fascinating was rediscovering the meaning and history of the antique masks. So many things to find out, and so amazing too! Our work has evolved and diversified over time, crossing the boundaries into scenery design and interior decoration, and promoting everything connected with masks, their history and craft. Our courses are very well attended and, as well as teaching all the principal theories and practices, leave a lot of room for creative expression. For a number of years now we have worked alongside travel agencies the world over which, through our intensive mask-making and painting courses, can offer their clients an enjoyable and culturally gratifying break.
